Lochie Waters on the Rise 🙌

Born and raised in St George, 25-year-old Lochie Waters #699 has always had a passion for motorbikes, but it was his experience at the inaugural St George 399 that ignited his love for off-road racing; one that leads him to this weekend’s ARB Gundy 500.

Waters’ inspiration to pursue his own career begun after meeting Kevy Nott at the 399, and in a remarkable concurrence of events, the now Toowoomba based butcher pitted alongside Baja Kevy in his maiden race at this year’s KJN Electrical Dam Buster.

“It was incredible to see Kevy, whom I had followed for years on his Baja journey, pit next to us in my first off-road race back in my hometown, we couldn’t have dreamt of a better start,” said Waters.

In a hugely impressive debut, Waters and his father Kevin prologued the ex-James Cook Can Am X3 in 14th, and swiftly found themselves with the big boys in the first heat.

“We went out at St George with no expectations, just wanted to have fun and learn the car. I must admit we got a bit of a shock to be called up in the first group, but we stuck to it and worked our way into 5th outright on Sunday morning.

Despite snapping a rim, and the front driveshaft in the final section, Waters was stoked to finish first in Class 6, and eighth outright behind a pool of experienced campaigners.

Now with all eyes on their first long course race at a star-studded Gundy 500, Waters is just looking forward to more time behind the wheel, adding to his St George and Dalby experience.

“We are super keen for Gundy, and our first enduro event. I will be happy to get more seat time and continue learning the car, if we can finish the 500kms and drive it into the trailer Sunday afternoon I’ll be happy.

With a plan to wrap up their 2024 season at the Don River Dash post Gundy, Waters will then evaluate and assess his options for next year’s championships: wanting to add as many races as possible to his schedule.

Waters would like to acknowledge his sponsors Uniplaza Meats, Cambo’s Contracting, Mike from Mike’s Shock Shop, Tink Mechanical; father Kevin for navigating, and all his family and friends who have provided invaluable assistance and support.

The 2024 ARB Gundy 500 takes place in Goondiwindi, Queensland this weekend, the 9th-11th of August.
